What is Investment Casting?

What is Investment Casting?

Also known as lost-wax casting, investment casting is a precision manufacturing process that has been used for thousands of years. While the oldest known examples date back to the fifth millennium BCE, modern investment casting has evolved into one of the most accurate and versatile methods of producing complex metal components.

The process involves creating a wax pattern, coating it with ceramic to form a mold, removing the wax, and then pouring molten metal into the cavity to create the final component. Advances in materials, tooling, and rigorous quality controls and inspection technologies have enabled manufacturers to achieve exceptional surface finishes, tight dimensional tolerances, and highly repeatable results.

While the fundamental principles of lost-wax casting have remained the same for thousands of years, modern investment casting is widely used to produce components with complex geometries, thin walls, undercuts, and intricate features that would be difficult, costly, or impossible to manufacture using many other casting methods.

Originally used as a method of creating decorative objects and jewelry, investment casting is now a critical manufacturing process across industries, including aerospace, medical, automotive, industrial equipment, and energy, where precision, consistency, and reliability are essential.

Our Investment Casting Process

Our Investment Casting Process

At Texmo Blank, we offer a range of investment casting processes to support different materials, component geometries, and application requirements. These include:

  • Atmospheric Casting: Also known as air-melt investment casting, or open-atmosphere casting, this process allows for smooth finishes and intricate details on small to medium parts.
  • Vacuum Casting: Ideal for nickel-based superalloys and other reactive materials, vacuum casting minimizes contamination while supporting demanding aerospace, energy, and industrial applications.
  • Low-Pressure Aluminum Casting: A process during which molten aluminum is pushed steadily into a reusable mold using low gas pressure, which is commonly used for durable, lightweight components requiring excellent mechanical properties.
  • Centrifugal Casting: Molten metal is poured into a rapidly spinning mold, allowing the centrifugal force to drive the dense metal outward. This allows for the creation of exceptionally strong, defect-free, thin-walled components and complex geometries.

Process selection is determined by factors including material specification, component geometry, mechanical property requirements, surface finish requirements, and production volume. Throughout production, rigorous inspection and quality control procedures ensure consistent, repeatable results.
